We had a beautiful pecan tree in front our house. Over 100-years-old and two-stories tall, it rained down pecans all fall. One spring, we noticed the leaves weren't quite as vibrant as they had been. A quick check by a knowledgeable friend revealed we had a problem: beetles. At night, these hungry bugs were boring into the bark and draining the life from the tree. The tree was damaged on the inside and every part—the heart, the bark, and the leaves—was impacted. Soon, it had to be removed.

Such is the depravity of man. The Bible teaches that depravity—wickedness and moral corruption—is rooted in our hearts as a result of sin. It infiltrates every aspect of our lives: the spiritual, moral, intellectual, and physical. Every part of us is touched by sin, just like every part of our tree was sick. We speak sinful words, we do sinful deeds, and we think sinful thoughts.

It is essential that we understand this doctrine so that we see our true nature, our need for salvation, and what God has done for us through Jesus Christ. As you study what the Bible teaches about the depravity of man this week, remember the good news, here from Ephesians 2:4-5: "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved." Amen!
