Dear NCFCA Friends,
On many occasions this summer and fall, you have heard us repeat that we are committed to ensuring that our families have competitive opportunities available in 2021 regardless of the shifting circumstances in our world. While we are still anticipating a hybrid season of onsite and online competition, we have chosen to host all of our national qualifying tournaments and a minimum of one qualifying tournament per region online, and we have created a platform to support the excellent experience you have come to expect from NCFCA tournaments. We know you are anxious for the details!
Last week we shared a few of the online tournament platform features you will experience! Would you like a sneak peek to see some of our progress?
*Note that the purpose of this photo is to demonstrate positioning on the screen, not to define rules or protocols. Before you ask...yes, you will need to wear tournament attire in an actual tournament.
Ready to get started?
The 2021 competition season will kick off with online national qualifying tournaments. National qualifying tournaments offer the benefit of competing with students from various areas of the country and provide the opportunity to earn invitations to Regional Championships and the National Championship. Every region will have three opportunities to participate in national qualifying tournaments according to the schedule below, and the number of invitations to the National Championship will remain the same. Moot Court competition will be hosted online on separate dates, eliminating the need from last year to limit speech events for moot court competitors.
January 6-9, 2021: National Open 1A “East Regions” (Regions 6, 7, 8, 9, 10)
January 13-16, 2021: National Open 1B “West Regions” (Regions 1, 2, 3, 5, 11, 12)
February 3-6, 2021: National Open 2A “Even-Numbered Regions” (Regions 2, 6, 8, 10, 12)
February 10-13, 2021: National Open 2B “Odd-Numbered Regions” (Regions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11)
March 3-6, 2021: National Open 3 “All Regions” (tentative, see explanation below)
March 10-13, 2021: National Open 3B, IF dividing the third National Open is deemed necessary
February 8-9, March 1-2, and April 5-6, 2021: Moot Court “All Regions”
Why this schedule? Size. With increased interest in NCFCA as well as the barriers of travel being removed, we anticipate that many students will be eager to participate. While our platform would accommodate everyone, we want to ensure a reasonable opportunity for qualification to the next levels of competition. We have prescribed specific region combinations on separate dates for at least two of the three National Opens. We have rearranged the prescribed regions for the second National Open to allow students to participate with a variety of competitors across the country. Tentatively, we are planning to combine all regions for the third National Open but will make a final determination in January based on participation numbers.
One online qualifier per region will be scheduled during the last two weeks of January. Your Regional Director will share the dates very soon.
Less than four months from now, regardless of the circumstances impacting areas of our nation, we will be prepared for our students to compete. We can’t wait to see you!
