Stepping Stones Week 6

Hello, friends!

Have you ever watched a debate filled with unfounded claims and empty rhetoric? Did you leave feeling confident in the ideas presented, or did you leave with more questions than answers? Through NCFCA Christian Speech and Debate, we discover that in order to persuade others, we must support our ideas with credible evidence, sound logic, and relevant examples. Just as we learn to defend positions, policies, and values, we must also learn to defend our faith.

As a child growing up in a Christian home, I read Bible stories and memorized key verses, accepting the truth and placing my faith in Jesus Christ. I knew what I believed. In college, however, professors and peers began to erode my confidence with questions for which I had no answers. They weren't asking the who, what, where, and when questions about Bible stories. They were asking, "Why do you believe the Bible is true in the first place?" and "Even if it was true, how is it relevant now?" Those questions resonated in my mind, driving me to doubt.

In his book, Disciple-Making Parents, Chap Bettis articulates what many teens are thinking, "We quietly wonder if Christianity is really true." If that's you, take heart! There are answers to your deeper questions. The truth can stand up to scrutiny. The Christian faith is credible, logical, and relevant. So how can we find the answers to our questions?

The study of apologetics invites you to discover the case for the Christian faith. Along the way, you'll find the credible evidence, sound logic, and relevant examples that make Christianity the most reasonable worldview. In addition to solidifying your own faith, you'll learn how to apply it in every arena and share it with others. As I Peter 3:15 reminds, "...in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense [apologia] to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect."

To help you get you started, we've added an apologetics section to our Stepping Stones. Based on the NCFCA Apologetics topics, this simple tool includes scriptures and questions to initiate daily conversations with your family. If you're ready for the next step, search out additional resources and consider competing in NCFCA Apologetics to sharpen skills.

Together, we can learn to defend our faith as ambassadors for Christ who communicate truth with integrity and grace.

In His Grace,

Amy Joy Tofte

NCFCA Director of Education

A note to parents and coaches: We shouldn't be surprised when our teens face doubts and questions about their faith. (For that matter, we shouldn't be surprised when we face doubts and questions of our own.) Instead, we can use these opportunities to engage in conversations, digging deeper into God's Word together. To help you learn alongside your students, check out additional resources from our friends at Fearless Apologetics and Worldview Academy. We are praying for you!
